Convoy 2000 headed by the new Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Sir John Stevens, has been launched to take humanitarian aid to orphans and children dying of aids in Romania. This convoy will be driven by Metropolitan Traffic Police Officers who have given two weeks of their holiday to help deprived children in this country. A team of workers most of which will be Police Officers will fly out to join the convoy in the capital Bucuresti, Romania. This team will work in orphanages and a terminal unit for children dying of aids.

During their time in Romania the team will assemble bunk beds that have been made by people on Probation in the Probation Service workshops. We have a baby and toddler orphanage with children up to the age of 6 years who will benefit from these bunk beds. A new laundry room will be installed to alleviate the problem of so much washing needed to be done each day. This orphanage will benefit from a huge playground being set up to give these children, 160 up to 6 years and 40 babies, some where to play. At the moment they are left to sit around without anything to amuse them.

The boys orphanage with 200 boys from 7years to 19 years, need equipment to help them with the boredom of having nothing to do. The orphanage play area needs to have a basketball, volley ball and football area made. I know this will be appreciated by the boys very much. We have some very talented boys in music and art and with this in mind we are trying to get equipment to make an art studio and music room. We would also like to install a small fitness room for the boys who are very keen to look after themselves especially in the winter when they cannot go outside because of the severe winter weather with temperatures down to -25 degrees and plenty of snow

Aid for Children has just formed its own foundation in Romania so as to control all our humanitarian aid that we take on the convoy and thereby making sure we distribute the aid to the right people. The charity has just secured a building and land which will be renovated by us to turn into a terminal intensive care unit for children to spend the last part of their precious life before they die. It is essential that the children who are dying from aids and other terminal diseases be given tender loving care and are allowed to die with dignity. We shall ensure that they have a proper burial because many of these children are orphans and have no relatives at all.

This unit will have a small operating theatre, dental clinic and also day clinics for the children who are living at home with their families, this amounts to at least 800 children. It is hoped that when the children come for their medical check ups that they will also have a dental check up at the same time. At this moment the children do not get dental treatment because the dentist are afraid to treat HIV children.

The unit will have a mortuary and chapel of rest which will be very important to make sure the children are put to rest with dignity.

With the land at the rear of the building we wish to install our own warehouse where we will control all our aid. From here the Humanitarian aid that is transported on our convoy from England will be stored and then distributed by us to the poor and needy. We shall also help the children with aids who live in family units. This will also give us garaging for our vehicles with the necessary security.

We have formed a good working relationship with the necessary government departments who are assisting us with this very important project. It is our intention that these special children will have been properly cared for and at the end of their life will not be afraid to die.

Many thanks from Christine Kirke.
